One of the things I’ve come to appreciate throughout my career is that success isn’t just about what you accomplish. It’s about how many people you help succeed along the way.
As Project Managers, Business Analysts, leaders, consultants, and professionals, we often focus on delivering the project, solving the problem, meeting the deadline, or hitting the goal.
But there’s another measure of success that doesn’t always show up on a dashboard:
Did the people around you become better because you were there?
Maybe you helped someone understand something they were struggling with.
Maybe you shared a lesson you learned the hard way.
Maybe you gave someone the confidence to speak up in a meeting.
Maybe you introduced someone to a new tool, technique, or way of thinking.
Or maybe you simply took the time to listen.
I’ve found that some of the most rewarding moments in my career haven’t been when I personally solved the biggest problem. They’ve been when I helped someone else realize they could solve it themselves.
That’s especially important as we move into an AI-enabled workplace. AI can help us work faster. It can automate tasks, analyze information, and help us find efficiencies. But the real opportunity is bigger than personal productivity.
What if we use the time we reclaim to help others?
To mentor.
To teach.
To share knowledge.
To develop the next generation of professionals.
To help our teams become more confident and capable.
Because at the end of the day, the best professionals aren’t necessarily the ones who know the most; they’re often the ones who are willing to help others learn what they know.
Success is great. But helping someone else succeed?
That’s impact.
